About DropAnything
DropAnything is a free tool for sending files directly between any two devices - iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac or Linux - straight from the browser, with no app, no account, and no size limit.
Why we built it
Moving a file between two devices that are not in the same ecosystem is far harder than it should be. AirDrop is wonderful, but only between Apple devices. Android's Quick Share is the same story inside Android. Windows has no equivalent that reaches a phone reliably. So the everyday task of getting photos off an iPhone and onto a Windows laptop, or sending a video from an Android phone to a friend's iPhone, turns into a hunt for the right cable, a wait for a cloud upload, or yet another app and sign-up. We built DropAnything so that the answer is always the same simple thing: open a web page on both devices and send.
How it works
DropAnything uses WebRTC, a technology built into every modern browser that lets two browsers open a direct connection to each other. When you create a pairing link, the tool briefly uses a small signalling server to introduce the two devices to each other - like exchanging phone numbers - and after that the files travel directly between them. The 6-digit code and QR code exist only to make that introduction; they carry no files themselves. Because the transfer is direct, your photos and videos are never uploaded to or stored on our servers, and they arrive at full original quality with no re-compression.
When two devices cannot open a direct link - for example if one is on a restrictive mobile network - the connection falls back to a secure relay so the transfer still succeeds. In transit the data is encrypted, and nothing is retained afterwards.
What you can send
Anything: photos (including iPhone HEIC, which is converted to JPG so it opens everywhere), videos of any length, music, PDFs and other documents, archives, and app files. There is no fixed size cap - the practical limit is the receiving device's free storage. You can also beam a snippet of text or a link between two connected devices, which is handy for moving a long URL from a phone to a computer.
Our privacy principle
The simplest way to keep your files private is to never take custody of them, and that is exactly how DropAnything is designed. Files move directly from one device to the other; we do not host them, scan them, or keep copies. There are no accounts, so there is nothing for us to profile. You can read the details on our privacy page.
